Traditional Lessons

SSRC offers traditional English riding lessons with a focus on the hunter/jumper discipline. We offer lessons from beginner to advanced and have school horses available for students to ride. To allow riders to learn and advance without the need to invest in purchasing or leasing a horse, our school horses range in ability level from beginner walk-trot to jumping. We also offer the opportunity to show and have show-quality horses available for riders who do not own their own horse.

All types of riders are welcome at SSRC. While many of our riders work towards jumping, it is not required. SSRC lessons focus on teaching strong fundamentals to ensure that riders are safe and effective. We place an emphasis on building a partnership with the horse. Instructors help create this partnership through:

  • Ground lessons to understand all aspects of horse care and to bond with the horse

  • Work establishing a rider’s seat; this work may include bareback lunge line lessons, use of a balance rein, or extensive no-stirrup work

  • Lessons on subtle and correct use of aids

  • Individualized goals to ensure each rider moves at a pace comfortable to him/her

  • Regular training rides for all program horses to ensure horses are physically and mentally prepared for lessons

Our slow, methodic approach to teaching horsemanship and riding skills creates correct, responsible, and kind riders.
