Adaptive Lessons

Horseback riding and activities can be fun, challenging, and therapeutic and having a disability does not have to exclude a person from participating in equine-related activities. SSRC offers adaptive lessons (either mounted or on the ground) to students with emotional, behavioral, cognitive, or physical disabilities. Instruction, tack, horses, and volunteers are adapted to meet the needs of each individual, and the goal of each lesson is to teach riding and horse skills while enjoying the horse.

To qualify for adaptive lessons, each prospective student must meet with instructors to ensure riding and/or activities are safe and appropriate options for the individual. Once approved, riding students must submit paperwork which may include a signed physicians consent form.

Riding students typically register for one 30 or 50-minute lesson per week. Private and group lessons are available. Instructors work closely with students and families to set safe, appropriate, and challenging short and long-term goals.

By learning to ride and interact with horses, riders gain a wealth of therapeutic benefits, which create positive changes both during their time in the saddle and in their daily lives.
